Born in 1885, John A. Sites was one of the first dental surgeons to practice in Defiance. Dr. Sites was also the second dental surgeon in Ohio to serve under the administration of Governor Frank B. Willis during World War I. His father was an inventor and patentee of the Defiance Box Company, located at the junction of the B & O and Wabash railroads (now Jackson Ave.). The Sites family home was built in 1897. The stately Queen Anne-style home has the original clapboard siding and slate roof. All the woodwork and floors are original, and the house has an ornate staircase and fireplace. A mural of Fort Defiance was painted above the staircase during the celebration of Defiance’s Bicentennial in 1994. Jean Smith is the current owner. |
